The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass (2007)
Screenplay by Chris Weitz, based on the novel by Philip Pullman; directed by Chris Weitz

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This New Line Cinema production tells the adventures of a girl, Lyra (Dakota Blue Richards), in a world where everyone has an animal “daemon,” or external manifestation of their soul.  Lyra gets caught up in a mysterious political conflict between her uncle (Daniel Craig) and the mysterious Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman), ultimately going on a journey of rescue and discovery.  Although the film seems a bit rushed to get everything from the book included, it is still a marvelous fantasy that brings a unique world to life.  The performances are very good throughout, and the special effects, especially the animated daemons, are top-notch.  It’s too bad this film didn’t do better at the box office—it’s unlikely the other two books in the series will be filmed—but at least we have the rest of the trilogy waiting for us to read.
