The Graveyard Book

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a book intended for young adults, and is excellent for adults, too. It begins with the murders of a mother, father, and child as they sleep by a man known only as Jack. Jack fails in his mysterious mission, however, by letting a toddler escape. The infant boy manages to crawl his way to a nearby cemetery. There, the ghosts adopt him and give him the name Nobody Owens (Bod for short). The book goes on to a series of vignettes in Bod’s life over the years as he grows up. He meets witches, vampires, and assorted supernatural beings, some of whom help and protect him from Jack, and others who are not so nice. This is a book that Harry Potter fans will undoubtedly enjoy, although it is darker than the Potter books. I hope there will be further adventures of Bod.
